LADY GAGA'S STAGE UNICORN TO INSPIRE DOSS, OTHERS IN 'CREATURE SHOP'

Lady Gaga’s stage unicorn takes a break from touring the world to visit the Creature Shop and serve as inspiration for this week’s Creature Brief. And Fort Irwin’s Melissa Doss will be among the contestants challenged to design and build creatures that will come to life in the SyFy reality TV show that airs at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Doss survived last week’s episode and will be among six contestants that are eligible win up to $100,000 and an opportunity to work at the world-renowned Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
The others still competing are Russ Adams of Ogden, Utah; Ben Bayouth of Woodland Hills; Robert Bennett of Orlando, Fla.; Jake Corrick of Belle Vernon, Pa.; and Lex Rudd of Guerneville. According to the brief from the show’s hosts, Gigi Edgley and Brian Henson, smoke pours into the shop as Gaga’s unicorn gallops through the doors. To highlight the movement of their creatures, designers must use UV paint to distinguish the anatomy in motion under black lights.
In this three-day build, the creature designers work in pairs to construct creatures that move with life-like motion, according to NBC Universal spokesperson Brenda Lowry. While two teams have a very similar plan, Lowry says the other team takes a very different approach.
Creature Shop mechanization supervisor John Criswell serves as master this week and guides the designers through their build.
The Creature Shop is partly transformed into a black light box for testing and the Henson puppeteers operating the creatures come into the workshop for rehearsal. The black light screen test takes place on the legendary Henson Sound Stage in Hollywood and one designer is named the winner of this challenge while one is eliminated from the competition.
